Why does your boss pay you?

Are you still at work, but your mind drifted off hours ago?

Smart companies know that they pay you for your attention.

You are paid for being  in the moment and thinking.

Everyone’s brain needs a change every few hours. That is how the mind works.

You can’t change this fact, but you can use it.

Forget energy, and all those chemicals. There is a healthy, easy way to shake off the fog and get your attention back. What is the secret? Fresh air and a short walk, plus a little bit of coffee or tea.

And a smile, if one is available.

Because you work in downtown Kernersville, you have this available right now. Stand up, leave your keys on your desk, and walk over to Wired Café, on Main Street.

Writing About a Coffee Shop

This is a letter to you, made possible by excitement. It is a fan letter, about a coffee shop very close to your desk, right now.

I work for a small business that doesn’t care where I am, so long as my days are long and my brain runs in high gear. So my day starts at 5:30 AM with co-workers in Asia, Africa, Europe, and America.  The new demands of a global economy, I guess. And all done from Kernersville.

Like you, I have a log and busy workday, I drink a truckload of coffee. And I have been to every coffee shop in our town, and many more all over the world. But my favorite is a new place right here in Kernersville.

It opened about 6 months ago. Have you seen it yet? I discovered it myself a couple of months ago.

You can find me there every weekday between 8:15 and 8:40. I am the 40-ish guy with the laptop and headset, talking to someone on the other side of the world.

When I walk in, my coffee is on the counter, in a mug with “Dean’ written on it. I like that.

If I feel like talking, there’s always a conversation available. If I don’t feel talkative, are I need to focus on my phone call, Wired’s peace and quiet are my coffee companions that morning.

Sometimes, like you, I need to think. Like you, sometimes I need to be inside my own head for a bit, to figure something out.

Even at the busiest time of day, the loudest thing at Wired Café is a quiet conversation.

The need you have to figure something out is why I am writing to you today. You work in downtown Kernersville and I know that sometimes your mind sails off when you need to pay attention.

I have a dead-simple recipe for you. Take a 5 minute walk, out in the fresh air, and go to Wired.

That simple recipe: Walking, Fresh Air, and Coffee, clears out your head. You can leave your keys on your desk, shake off whatever just happened, and reset back to being focused.

You can be back at your desk so fast, it will be like you never left. But the world will be a different place.

Joanie

But there is more.

The owner, Joanie, reminds me of that saying “Don’t hire people and tell them to be nice. Hire nice people”. She is ‘nice people’.

She had a diner in Greensboro for a long time, and it’s still in business, but she isn’t involved anymore.

Then she worked as a real estate agent for 10 years. But no surprise, that isn’t a good business to be in anymore.

And today you can see how happy she is, in her little coffee shop, serving people hot drinks, cold smoothies, and snacks all day long as they drop in to see her.

Since you are going to do business with her, you deserve to know what she is like.

  1. She grew up in the Triad, and has never lived anywhere else.
  2. I have seen her cheer people up, and talk to people in ways I cannot (or would never want to).
  3. She is crazy about her kids and just knows that they are finest people she has ever met.
  4. She is really short. The kind of woman who wears high heels to see over the counter. Well, not literally true, but is almost true. Very very short, but a bundle of energy.

So that is Joanie.

What is Wired Café like?

At even the busiest time of day, the loudest thing at Wired Cafe is a conversation. This is where you can jot down an idea in your notepad (or into your phone).

It is small and cozy. Some places use loud music to drive people out faster. Joanie doesn’t, because that’s just rude. Joanie just can’t be rude.

Remember that thing that you couldn’t quite bring to the front of your mind. Smile a little smile because it’s feels wonderful when your creativity and pen are working together.

Your computer is welcome here. Your phone is lightning quick because the wifi is fast and free. Really fast. Faster than any other coffee place in  Kernersville,by a mile.

Try getting a wireless connection this fast, on a busy Friday afternoon, at any other coffee shop in Kernersville. Yu can’t do it! This is fast enough to stream an HD movie.

Tip: The wi-fi password is on the chalkboard, by the front door. They almost never change, since that would be inconvenient to you.

If you become a regular, you can have your own mug. It has your name on it, there is no charge, and you never have to clean up after yourself. This is provided for regular customers. Mine is in the upper left of the rack, if you want to confirm this for yourself. If it isn’t there, look to your left… I might be using it!

Parking is easy, Park at the back. Or, use the extra free parking across the street (some people find that more convenient, it’s where Joanie the Owner parks, too).

Finally….

Even though Wired isn’t part of Evy’s Gifts, there are French doors opened into that store, so feel free to browse. It’s all friendly here.

They also have a Crazy Guarantee:

If the walk, the fresh air, the time away from your desk, and the refreshing drink don’t make you feel better, if you don’t LOVE the experience, your coffee is FREE.

Try this place. you will like it.

P.S.

I told Joanie that I posted a letter about Wired, and she asked me to add this important note. If you print a page from this letter and bring it in, she will give you half off a regular coffee because you are a new customer. You should do this. If Joanie makes a promise like that, you can count on her to keep it.

P.S. Come in any weekday and Joanie guarantees that the brownies she bakes every day will make you happy

P.P.S. My daughters, when they pretend they are sick, come with me in the mornings, and they love the smoothies.
